Day 13

Senior Project | May 24th  This morning marked our last morning of Senior Project, as we only needed three more hours of work to hit the 55-hour mark. Mitchell and I began the morning where we usually do, at the Dining Hall for breakfast. Once we were done, we went to Admissions office to work on and complete our flyers that we're going to be presenting on our table tomorrow at Express Fest. We were there from around 10:00 - 1:00. We had trouble creating them at first, as we didn't know how exactly to format them, but we figured it out eventually and ended up creating a product we were happy with. We hope to share it with anyone that is interested tomorrow. We hit our hour requirement and feel ready and confident for tomorrow's presentation.  Hours Today: 3 Total Hours: 55

Day 12

Senior Project | May 23rd This morning, Mitchell and I went to breakfast to start the day off right. Then, we all met at assembly to make an announcement regarding Green Key leader results and where to find them. After that, we headed to the Admissions office to work with Alicia on potential display options for our Express Fest presentation. We then broke for lunch around noon. Around 1:00pm, we went back to Admissions and spent time working on creating small flyers that contain all sorts of stats and facts about the school - we’re hoping these could be used at Admissions events if they come out well enough. Since none of us had an after school activity, we spent the rest of the afternoon working on designing new Admissions t-shirts, and finalizing our setup for Wednesday’s presentation. It was a good, productive day.  Hours Today: 5 Total Hours: 52

Weekly Reflection #2

Senior Project | Weekly Reflection #2 It’s hard to believe we’ve already made it through the second week of Senior Project. This past week has flown by even quicker than the first, mostly, due to the switch we made halfway through last week, transitioning from Student Event Coordinators to Admissions Interns. I’d say so far, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Admissions office and have learned more than we expected we would in such a small matter of time. On Monday, we began the week off by giving a tour to an 8th grader from Aspen, Colorado named Isaac. Isaac was very curious about many different aspects of Proctor and was overflowing with questions for us. This question-answering has become my favorite part of giving tours; being able to talk and answer questions about the community while also sharing what I’ve learned and been taught has been a very reflective experience for me. I’ve enjoyed this passing-on of information to kids who have yet to begin their journey here. ...

Day 11

Senior Project | May 20th This morning, Alicia took Mitch, Trey, Nora, and I off campus for breakfast at Tucker’s in New London. The food was great and the Admissions talk even better. We decided to use some of the time to go over Green Key Leader applications and discussed which individuals we thought would fit the role best. There were 31 applications we had to go through and read, many of which were very good. We chose 15 students in total, 5 of which will be off-campus in the fall, so 10 leaders for the start of next school year. Once we got back to campus, we went to the Admissions office to present Alicia with our plans for the end-of-the-year Green Key Party. Once we were done with that, we spent more time working on our Proctor tour guide cheat sheet. We felt as though we got a lot done today and we’re pumped for more to come tomorrow.  Hours Today: 5 Total Hours: 47

Day 10

Senior Project | May 19th This morning, Mitchell and I began the morning by getting up for breakfast so we’d be properly fueled for our day ahead. Afterwards, we continued onto the gym where we got in a brief sweat. We then headed over to Admissions to meet with Alicia who had just returned from her trip. She introduced us to neuropsychological evaluations and explained to us how to read them in the context of a learning profile she might receive. Because of the prominent learning skills program at Proctor, the Admissions department deals with these profiles often and must have a solid understanding of how they affect a student’s transcript, application, and overall learning experience. It was interesting to learn more about this specific aspect of Proctor Admissions. We also discussed acceptances (what weighs into them), reading transcripts, and teacher recommendations. It was a productive day and we learned a lot. More tomorrow.  Hours Today: 5 Total Hours: 42

Day 9

Senior Project | May 18th This morning, the three of us got a little bit of a sleep in as our first commitment of the day was a 10:00 tour. I woke up around 9:15, showered and ate, and then headed down to Admissions with Mitch and Trey. The tour went well. It was an incoming student who hadn’t seen campus yet so it was nice to show him around for the first time. We finished up around 11:30 and then got a quick bite to eat for lunch. After lunch, we had around an hour before Trey and I had to be on Carr field for our game warmups so we spent that time working on new Admissions brochures; changing designs, wording, placement of information, etc. After afternoon games, we had a little bit more time before I had to head to Shrek rehearsal so we organized our plans for the Green Key Party and began creating a proposal for Alicia. It was an action-packed day, for sure. More tomorrow.  Hours Today: 4 Total Hours: 36

Day 8

Senior Project | May 17th Today, we started the day off right by going to the Dining Hall for a nice breakfast, and then headed to the gym for a brief workout afterwards. At around 10:00am, we headed down to the Admissions Office where Alicia put us to work on some incoming student outreach projects. We worked on creating a Google Form on which incoming students can present introductory information for themselves and through it hopefully meet other incoming students. We wrapped that up around noon and then grabbed a quick lunch at the Dining Hall. Then, at 1:00pm, we gave a tour that lasted until around 2:30pm. After that, we had a call with Alicia and discussed the end-of-the-year Green Key Party. The three of us spent another 30-45 minutes planning and brainstorming ideas for that nearing event. It was a busy day and we feel we got a lot done. More to come tomorrow.  Hours Today: 5 Total Hours: 32

Day 7

Senior Project | May 16th Today, our group started the morning by heading over to Admissions around 9:00 to briefly meet with Alicia before a tour we had to give at 9:30. After our meeting, we met the kid who we’d be touring, and his mother, and then started the tour. He was an 8th grader so it was definitely a little different than some other tours because he was so young, but it still went well. We were able to share with him some advice, not just for Proctor, but for high school in general. I think he and his mother found the tour helpful and informative, which is always our goal. After the tour we stuck around for another 30 minutes and helped answer some more questions of theirs. We then broke for lunch. After lunch, we went back to the Admissions office for the afternoon and worked on new Admissions broachers, as well as ran a couple errands for Alicia. All in all, it was a good day.  Hours Today: 5 Total Hours: 27

Weekly Reflection

Senior Project | Weekly Reflection It’s hard to believe we’ve already been through one whole week of Senior Project. Our project has certainly taken its twists and turns, starting at Student Event Coordination and now, a week later, Admissions interns. This total switch in our project was not random or uncalled for, but instead actually quite necessary in order for my group mates and I to fulfill the requirements of Senior Project. Simply put, our first project did not provide us with enough opportunity to clock in hours. Our original goal was to put on certain events and activities for the whole student body that, hopefully, they would participate in and enjoy. This would get students out of their rooms, and instead, into more active, social environments. This was the plan. However, as we’ve found out, a prep school, given its schedule full of classes, sports, theater, clubs, and many other extracurriculars, does not make for the best setting for this plan. We failed to consider ...

Day 6

Senior Project | May 14th This morning, the three of us woke up bright and early to yet another gorgeous Spring day. We had an 8:30am tour to get to so we made sure to get some breakfast (and caffeine) in us before we made our way down to the Admissions office. Once we got down there, we were greeted by a team-full of freshman-age French-Canadian hockey players and their parents. They spoke primarily French and most of their English was quite broken. It was certainly interesting to meet people who speak a different language and enjoy a different culture, yet only come from a few hours away (they said 4 hour drive). There were so many of them we had to split up and each take a group. Trey and Mitchell took a large group of kids, while I took the parents. I also got some help from Nora Flanagan who took some parents as well. I had at least 6 couples with me, all of whom knew each other and were quite friendly and talkative with each other throughout the tour. They were eager to ask ...

Day 5

Senior Project | May 13 We started off the day by meeting with Alicia at around 9:30am. We had a discussion on what needed to get done for the day, including: a tour later in the day, work on the admissions Instagram page, the Hornet’s Nest, and some paperwork she needed organized. We were all with her working on separate things until we broke for lunch at around noon. After lunch, at 12:30, we spent some more time working on the Instagram page meant for newly accepted students. Then at 1:30, the three of us had to give a tour to a family from Queens, NY. The tour went well and I enjoyed getting to know the family. It was an action-packed first day of our new Senior Project, and I’m excited for more to come.   Hours Today: 5 Total Hours: 18

Day 4

Senior Project | May 12th Last night, our group discussed the possibility of shifting gears and changing our Senior Project. We became worried that with the already packed schedules of Proctor students it would be difficult and unlikely that many would attend our events. We understand that most of the Proctor community is still in classes and has a lot else to deal with at this point in the year. Considering this issue, it would be very hard to fill our necessary hours, as we were planning on getting a lot from events. Instead, we met with Alicia Barry and discussed the possibility of working as admissions interns for the remainder of Senior Project. We went over the logistics of the gig and set out a plan for how we would fill the next week and a half. I'm very excited about this and excited to see what this opportunity may hold. More to come soon.  Hours Today: 2 Total Hours: 13

Day 3

Senior Project | May 11th This morning, Mitchell and I began the day by going to breakfast and then right after, the gym. This was another great start to the morning, and we were feeling ready to go. After that, we met up with Trey at our favorite spot outside of Rulon, and discussed our next steps. We wanted to focus in on one project and go further into its specific potential logistics. We decided to do so for our mini golf course idea. Trey emailed Trish about the possibility and she responded promptly with a time for all of us to meet. We went to her office and talked the idea over with her. She advised us to get in touch with maintenance as soon as possible to see whether they would help us out / allow us the space necessary for the idea. We went over to maintenance immediately after and discussed the idea with them - specifically whether they would do us the favor of cutting the grass short enough for a golf green. We're still in communication with them and are trying to work...

Day 2

Senior Project | May 10th  I woke up for Day 2 of Senior Project amped up and ready to go. I began the day at breakfast where I fueled up properly, and then went to the gym for around 30 minutes and got in a quick workout. After that, I headed back to Rulon dorm and made plans to meet with my partners for our first session of the day. At around 9:45am, Trey, Mitchell, and I met at our usual spot (the chairs outside of Rulon) to discuss what we hoped to accomplish for the day. We decided that we need some type of virtual form or site that our classmates can access in order to vote, express interest, etc. in regards to activities we may plan. The site will contain spreadsheets, Google Forms, and other information that will keep the community up to date with everything we've got going on. We want to learn about what the student body is most interested in and then from there, plan accordingly. We ended our first session at 11am and went to lunch. At noon, we reconvened and got to work ...

Day 1

Image
Senior Project | May 9th Today marked the first day of Senior Project 2022. I took the opportunity to sleep in but made it a priority with my partners, Trey and Mitchell, to begin brainstorming and planning events by 10am. We met outside of Rulon, got comfy in our Adirondacks and set to work. Our goal for the morning session was to come up with a number of potential ideas for events that would be both entertaining for the whole Proctor community and financially feasible. Some of our ideas included: a wiffle ball tournament, movie night on the turf, "Stay Afloat" contest, flag football tournament, the revival of Proctor assassins (water guns), ghosts in the graveyard, mini golf, spike ball tournaments, scavenger hunts, and more. We understand that some of these ideas may not be possible for one reason or another, so we hope through sheer abundance of ideas, enough will workout; and we're confident enough will. After our morning session, we got lunch and planned our activi...
